Project Update – Tanker L759 Steel Repairs

2025-03-23T18:45:10+11:00

Restoration of Oil Wagon L759 has now commenced. Our volunteers have been busy welding and re-attaching pipes and handrails that were removed for transport. We still have a few bits to repair and straighten, but the bulk of the metal repairs are now complete. In a few weeks, this wagon will be completely transformed as we use a dustless blasting process to remove the rust, corrosion and old paint before getting it's first coat of primer. This is a really exciting process and we can't to see the result. Stay tuned for more updated at the end of the [...]

Winter is Gardening Time

2024-10-06T18:50:04+11:00

Over the cooler months, our volunteers have been working hard to maintain our gardens and landscaping in preparation for spring. Across the precinct at Cooma, we have a variety of gardens (including our award-winning roses 🏆🌹) as well as some fantastic fruit trees, many of which were planted by workers during the Snowy Hydro era. Before the warmer weather returns, many of our plants and trees needed some extra love which included pruning of bushes, trimming and thinning trees, weeding garden beds, fertilising and new mulch all the way around. This has been a huge effort and our volunteers [...]

Cruise Express Visits Cooma

2024-10-06T18:42:35+11:00

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting guests from the Cruise Express Grand Southern Loop Tour as they embarked on a three week tour of heritage railways across NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Cooma Station was buzzing as our guests enjoyed Devonshire Tea on the platform, toured the museum and railway precinct, and learnt about the history of the railway at Cooma through some entertaining talks from our museum volunteers. It was great to see the platform packed with people. We had such a great morning and we hope our guests enjoyed their visit to Cooma. Checkout their website [...]

Trackwork Continues

2024-10-06T18:57:52+11:00

More progress in the yard today as the team finished installation of more replacement sleepers, serviced the points to the loco and carriage roads and the catch points on the through road. We then started to cleanup the splintered remains of sleepers that have been removed over the past few months. It's a big job, but the team are doing some great work and we're making some good progress. It's also great to see some of the amazing mechanical engineering in action with the signal and interlocking system. (and yes, we know that we weren't using a rag and [...]

Project Update – VW Quad

2024-09-03T22:12:35+10:00

After being entirely stripped down, sand blasted, repaired and painted, our volunteers have now started to re-assemble the vehicle. Fresh decking boards have been installed while the wheels and brake system have also been put back together. It's taken a while to get to this stage but the result is looking amazing. 🙌 With a few more body pieces to attach, the restoration of the body and running gear will be complete, and our volunteers can turn their attention to the motor. Unfortunately, the motor isn't looking as good as the rest of the vehicle and requires a complete [...]

Project Update – MBC22959 Interior

2024-08-18T18:26:18+10:00

With the exterior restoration complete, our volunteers have been focusing on the interior restoration of MBC22959 and it's looking amazing! We've been able to retain the patina of the side walls which have been cleaned and sanded, ready for oiling while the timber roof has been stripped, repaired and painted. The sheet metal at the ends which housed the ice blocks are slowly being cleaned and repaired, with small amounts of sheet metal being replaced to remove rust and replace missing parts. Most recently, the team have been working on the installation of the new timber floor which is [...]

Project Update – Tennis Court Restoration

2024-08-18T18:20:29+10:00

The restoration of the Cooma Railway Institute Tennis Courts is starting to take shape. The transformation has been exciting to watch and the surface is starting to look amazing. 🤩 Originally constructed in 1928 from Ant Hills or Termite Mounts, the courts are almost 100 years old and were built for the railway workers at Cooma and their families. As part of the Cooma Railway Institute restoration, a new retaining wall has been constructed between the oil siding above, new fencing has been installed around the courts, services have been reconnected to the toilet block, and a completely new [...]

Rail Safety Week

2024-08-11T18:21:50+10:00

This week is Tracksafe National Rail Safety Week where we raise awareness of our railways to help keep everyone safe, especially in regional areas like Cooma. Unlike many other railways, the railway corridor at Cooma has only recently become active again after a period of inactivity which can result in people assuming that trains won't be operating and potentially putting themselves into a situation where they might be in danger. This includes cars at road level crossings and pedestrians crossing the tracks. We would like to remind everyone to take care around the railway corridor and Expect the Unexpected. [...]

Work Continues – Stop block installed at Snowy Junction

2024-06-08T14:33:59+10:00

Our track crew continued their work on the railway corridor with a new temporary stop block and stop sign installed before the missing crossing on Polo Flat Road at Snowy Junction. The team also cleared the vegetation around the section. While work continues on getting the level crossing reinstalled, this will be our northern limit of operation for the short term. It was great to see so many people waving and stopping again. It's really heartening to have so much community support and it really motivates our team to keep working hard to get our trains running again. -------------- [...]
