CMR Secures $60,104 Heritage Grant to Advance Planning for Cooma Railway Precinct

Cooma Monaro Railway Inc. (CMR) is pleased to announce that it has been awarded $60,104 in Stream 2 Heritage Funding through the NSW Government’s Transport Heritage NSW (THNSW) program, supported by Transport for NSW and the Independent Funding and Advisory Panel (IFAP).

The funding will enable CMR to undertake essential heritage planning, engineering and compliance work across the Cooma Railway Station and Yard Precinct, including the heritage-listed locomotive shed.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education and Member for Monaro, The Hon. Steve Whan MP, welcomed the funding:

“The Cooma Railway Station Precinct is a source of real pride for the local community, and this funding recognises the care and commitment that has gone into preserving it over many years. This work helps ensure the site can continue to be valued, protected and enjoyed by future generations.”

CMR President Gordon Strachan said the funding represents a significant step in the long-term revitalisation of the precinct.

“This Stream 2 funding allows us to complete the detailed planning and heritage assessments needed to progress major conservation works in the precinct. It also strengthens the foundation for reinstating safe, compliant heritage rail operations on the Monaro—an outcome strongly supported by our volunteers and community.”

The project will deliver:

  • a comprehensive Statement of Heritage Impact (SoHI)
  • building fabric and services assessments (roofing, guttering, drainage, electrical and plumbing)
  • access and safety planning including pathways, lighting and compliance upgrades
  • fire-safety and emergency systems planning
  • structural and termite-damage investigations for the heritage locomotive shed
  • conservation planning for additional heritage structures within the precinct
  • These works will form the heritage-approved foundation for future capital works and restoration projects, supporting long-term conservation, community access and regional tourism.
