Project Update – MBC22959

2025-03-23T19:26:49+11:00

Work is continuing on the interior restoration of wagon MBC22959. Our volunteers have been applying the final coats of varnish to the interior walls of the wagon while the beautiful new floor has received it's first coat of Black Japan stain. Work will continue this week with another coat of Black Japan to be applied to floor before a final coat of varnish and the team can move on to painting the metalwork at the end of the wagon. A lot of hours have gone into this restoration project and it's looking amazing. We look forward to finishing the [...]

Refuelling Restoration

2025-03-23T19:21:25+11:00

Our volunteers have commenced the static restoration of the diesel refuelling facilities at the southern end of the station platform. Hoses, pipes, framework and rigging is being reassembled and painted, while new doors have been installed on on the cupboards. The refuelling facilities were used by diesel hauled trains from Sydney, who would refuel before heading back north, as well as the southbound diesel railmotor and freight services with multiple refuelling points available along the main platform road. The ground frame that controls access to the southern dock platform, is also receiving some attention as the interlocking system is [...]

Project Update – Tennis Courts

2025-03-23T19:15:38+11:00

After months of hard work from our volunteers, the restoration of our 1928 Tennis Courts and the Cooma Railway Institute Building are nearing completion. Our volunteers have been busy completing landscaping and concrete pathways around the precinct as well as rolling the courts and installing the lines. Unlike hardcourt tennis courts, our traditional clay-based surface requires constant rolling and maintenance to keep it in top condition and ready to play. This has been a huge project for our team of dedicated volunteers who have put in 100s of hours to get the project to where it is today. Stay [...]

Project Update – Railway Institute Building

2025-03-23T19:09:58+11:00

Our volunteers have been working hard to complete work on the grounds around the restored Railway Institute Building at Cooma. In addition to the new garden and landscaping, the team have been laying new concrete pathways around the building as well as access paths to the tennis courts and pathways around the toilet block. Completing these pathways is the last step in a long project to bring the Institute Building and Tennis Courts back to life and back to the community.

Bocco Rock Grant – Tractor for CMR

2025-03-23T19:01:22+11:00

A huge thank you to Snowy Monaro Regional Council and the Bocco Rock Community Enhancement Fund for funding the purchase of a tractor for CMR. We were lucky enough to be successful with our application for the 2024 Bocco Rock Community Enhancement Fund grant. Last week our tractor arrived in Cooma and is ready to hit the ground running. The addition of the tractor to our workforce will make a huge difference for our volunteers. Many of the manual tasks that our volunteers are currently performing by hand can now be accomplished in a fraction of the time. It [...]

Project Update – Tanker L759

2025-03-23T18:55:15+11:00

It's been an exciting week on the restoration project of Oil Tanker L759 as we were joined by Bob Petrovski from Precision Dustless Blasting to strip the tanker back to bare metal in preparation for paint. The process of dustless blasting combines water and aggregate into a slurry, in our case recycled glass, which is then blasted on to the surface using a high-pressured hose to remove any paint, organic growth and rust. The blasting process was completed over two days and the team were then able to apply the primer the following day, and have now applied the [...]

Trackwork Update – New Sleepers

2025-03-23T18:50:06+11:00

Thanks to the generous donations from our supporters and the hard work from our volunteers, our perway team were delighted to receive fresh batch of new timber sleepers this week to continue their work on the southern end of the platform road. This section of the track is being repaired to allow our rolling stock, including our CPH Rail Motors to travel around the yard and up to the platform. After being delivered yesterday from Sydney, the team didn't waste any time in laying them out along the track, ready for them to be installed. While it's great to [...]

Project Update – Tanker L759 Steel Repairs

2025-03-23T18:45:10+11:00

Restoration of Oil Wagon L759 has now commenced. Our volunteers have been busy welding and re-attaching pipes and handrails that were removed for transport. We still have a few bits to repair and straighten, but the bulk of the metal repairs are now complete. In a few weeks, this wagon will be completely transformed as we use a dustless blasting process to remove the rust, corrosion and old paint before getting it's first coat of primer. This is a really exciting process and we can't to see the result. Stay tuned for more updated at the end of the [...]

Winter is Gardening Time

2024-10-06T18:50:04+11:00

Over the cooler months, our volunteers have been working hard to maintain our gardens and landscaping in preparation for spring. Across the precinct at Cooma, we have a variety of gardens (including our award-winning roses 🏆🌹) as well as some fantastic fruit trees, many of which were planted by workers during the Snowy Hydro era. Before the warmer weather returns, many of our plants and trees needed some extra love which included pruning of bushes, trimming and thinning trees, weeding garden beds, fertilising and new mulch all the way around. This has been a huge effort and our volunteers [...]

Cruise Express Visits Cooma

2024-10-06T18:42:35+11:00

Recently, we had the pleasure of hosting guests from the Cruise Express Grand Southern Loop Tour as they embarked on a three week tour of heritage railways across NSW, Victoria and South Australia. Cooma Station was buzzing as our guests enjoyed Devonshire Tea on the platform, toured the museum and railway precinct, and learnt about the history of the railway at Cooma through some entertaining talks from our museum volunteers. It was great to see the platform packed with people. We had such a great morning and we hope our guests enjoyed their visit to Cooma. Checkout their website [...]
